Warren Day 2

Match 4 - Kevin Lucas (1395 - now 1413) 1-2 Loss
I finally got to play someone under 1500 and I felt like I could definitely take the match. Little did I know how poorly I was about to play.

Game 1 - Score: 378 - 404 (Loss)
I started off the game well, getting AGENESIA(68) down and him trying to challenge it off. A couple more mediocre plays and I'm up 80 and he puts down mARQUIS (85). I hold, not a word I know, and I only see fAQUIRS in that rack, not an easy find. I think given him challenge my play early he has gottan confused with MAQUIS or some such and I challenge. Apparently its not that uncommon of a word (a french gentlemen). Its just not one I have seen. Follow that he draws the other blank and gets down ReCOVERS(89) and goes up 100. He tries to block the last bingo line and gives me NITRIDES(80) to the triple. Its not enough though as he goes draws the j out of the bag and finishes me off with JERKS (32). If I hadn't challenged MARQUIS maybe I'd have beaten him to that second blank and won. Can't think about things like that though, its a downward spiral from there.

Game 2 - Score: 369 - 374 (Loss)
Always hurts to lose a close one like this. Always find tons of little mistakes I made that could have gotten me those extra points. This game is no exception. I draw the blank right off the bat and cant do anything with it until turn 4 where I get down EAR(L)OCKs(65). I was hoping to draw a challenge but it wasn't even held. He follows that up with (T)ALLIERS(77) and I then get down W(A)XED(50) to get a small lead. He hits back with JUNTO to the triple for 41. I have to exchange a no vowel rack, he gets (A)QUA for 33 and Im down 44. I fish off with P(U)D for 12 leaving INRST. I hit next turn with (U)NITaRDS (70) and Im back in the game. I draw into a double u rack while he fishes for a bingo. I mess up the endgame and don't find the hard to see tieing sequence and lose by 3, 4 in a recount. I also had mistracked and thought he had a y, my time was almost gone too. I have to start tracking right.

Game 3 - Score: 461 - 339 (Loss)
This game started out rough. He opened through my GINNY with REACH(I)NG and soon after got down FID(D)LERs. I phonied with VASED (47) but after an x play I was still down 61. ZOO(36) gets me closer. Then I phony again with ARBALAS for 82 (the word I was thinking of is ARGALAS). He draws into some vowel heavy ranks and I get the non bingo ANTIQU(E) for 72. He got the last blank but there were no bingos to be had, and he blocked the only line left (I had SAPIENT/SPINATE there) and I sailed on to a nice win.
I lost the series, which really bummed me out over lunch, and everyone was surprised I had lost (which made me feel worse), but I was 6-6 and the class prize was still a possibility.

Match 5 - Scott Pianowski (1598 - now 1597)

Game 1 - Score: 426 - 357 (Loss)
Pretty boring game, he bingoes early with ERRANTS(69), I score heavy a few turns in a row ZIN(31), HURDLE(28), WIPER(28), KENAF(32), to stay in it. He draws the blank first and bingoes POUTERS(77). I draw the blank next turn with 3 i's, pass them, draw aae, knew it wasnt going to be my game. He opens the board with C(E)MENT 32, putting the t in the triple triple lane. I miss the only triple-triple (DISkETTE(131) and grab hEISTED(79) instead, but I'm still down 50 and I never catch up. If i see DISKETTE It would put me tied with him on turn going into the endgame with a random rack, chances of a win are small but still better then none. Gotta look at making the blank every letter, even non common ones.

Game 2 - Score: 513 - 415 (Win)
A game in which my mistakes were outshined by my opponents. He gets BIZES(39) early on, a turn later I get STaTING(82) to the triple. He comes back with INFUSER(77), and I answer with CORONET(87). Which unfortunately opened up an X spot, and he gets AX(54). A pretty high scoring game for both sides, J(I)MP(30) for me, MO(N)Y 41 for him, WI(N)ED 28 for me, (D)ELVE(30) for him. Now I draw into DEIRST?, the only lines are hooking jimp or ending in an e. I chicken out on SIDERIT(E), and try and hook an s to JIMP for ASTRIDE(84), even though I had previous review it and knew it only took a Y. He challenges it off instantly, then plays KHAN(38) to go up 54. But he slotted the K in the triple-triple lane, 4th down, knowing exactly the letters I had since he had challenged off ASTRIDE. I play DOR(K)IEST(158) quickly and the game is over. He could have played HANK(44) in the exact same spot and made it a much closer game. DORKIEST ended up tieing for highest points scored on a turn prize, which was nice since I didn't win anything else.

Game 3 - Score: 389-346 (Loss)
I was playing catchup this whole game, and just never quite caught up. He bingo/bango's early with CHaR(T)ING(65) and SAILBO(A)T 65. After the game he says he thinks he missed something in ABILOST and I immediated spot the OBLASTI(85) play, which he is upset he missed. After SAILBOAT, he had put the S in the triple-triple column, and I held AEILNT?, and burned almost 5 minutes of time looking for the triple-triple. There is none to be had in the position where the S was, so I play cANI(S)TEL(74). I trail 40-50 the whole game until he beats me to the S for the triple word score and gets ZORIS(50). I play off OE(13) leaving AERTS on a pretty open board, thinking I still have a change if the tiles are kind. He finds a nice play PHT(34) and I draw the Q which I have to fish off for Q(I)(21) leaving AEIRST. I
draw a U, game over. My out bingo DARTLES(66) cuts some spread, but It's still a loss and finishes me up at 7-8 for the weekend.
He complemented me on my play after the game saying I was way underrated. After some pretty mediocre playing that day I felt I deserved to be rated where I was.

After our game was over I got to go over and watch Steve Grob crush Winter for the championship, which lifted my mood considerably. Then after a rather emotional award ceremony (tears were shed, by more then one), we said our goodbyes and then were off to Kentucky for another long drive. Luckily I had remembered to charge my laptop at Steve's house the night before and was able to Quackle some games on the long ride home.

Day two - 6 games 11 bingoes
Combined - 15 games 30 bingos
Blanks - 14/30, I can live with that.

It was a really fun tournament, I got some good experience, and I got to see some of the friends I had made up in the Fenton tourney and even made a few more. Michigan/Ohio has a really great community of scrabble players (nothing like KY's of course!) and I urge you guys to go up there if you get a chance. I look forward to the next time I can (maybe in Elyria Oh, 3/14).

Warren Day 1

Got my new rating in , 1424, a gain of 52 points. Performance rating for the tourney was 1526, I am pretty happy with that. I'm now the number 5 top player in KY, not counting Matt Ridout that is.

I rode up on friday to Warren, MI with Bryan Bowman and Kelly McKenzie.
Got up sat morning at about 7:30, got ready and we headed to warren from the hotel. Took about 30 minutes, grabbed some Tim Hortons and I was ready to go.

This tournament was different from any other tourney ive played in, in more then one way. The tourney wasnt your typical round robin or KOTH(king of the hill), it was a match based KOTH. You played the same opponent 3 times in a row. If you won 2 out of the 3 you moved on (if you lost you were sent to the losers bracket where you still played matches, but winning matches was only good for your record, not for KOTH). Also it was my first tourney where a former national champ was present, Joel Sherman. He is a pretty quiet fellow, keeping to himself a lot of the time (when hes not hacking up snot or phlegm).

Match 1 - Steve Grob (1648 - now 1716) 1-2 Loss
I was really happy to have Steve as my first opponent. I stayed with him one night at the Fenton Tourney and would be staying with him saturday night as well. He is a great guy, very friendly and an awesome scrabble player. I was extremely happy he won the tourney.

Game 1 - Score: 527-389 (Win)
I started off the tourney great, answering his AUTOINg(71) with the double-double RATIF(I)ED(98). Then drew into the natural BULKING(77) which came in second for low prob 7 bingo. Followed up with WH(A)M (36) and the disconnected 9 gR(E)EDIES(T) (72) for a total of 283 in 4 turns. That put me up almost 100 and it was smooth sailing from there on out, sealing the deal with TERCELS (70). Steve complemented me on the disconnected 9, Ive only played one other one in my scrabble career and it was also against him. Good to start off the tournament with a bagging, I felt good going into game 2.

Game 2 - Score 460-353 (Loss)
He opened with WAXILY(44), I bingoed early with SEITANS(70), then he bingoed back with DATARIe(S). I drew into the q and some clunky racks, scoring 20ish each time but keeping the q and junk. He kept hitting hard 31, 27, 30, 30, and by the time I finally exchanged (should have earlier most likely) I was down 70. Had to exchange after a UUI draw a couple of turns later, and he never let up. aUNTIES for 78 left me down 50, and some more ugly racks (ACGIOUY, AAGHOUL, etc) kept me from catching up.

Game 3 - Score 338-418 (Loss)
This game can be chalked up to my error. Early on in the game on a closed board I held CEILRSU and instead of fishing with CUT, I decided to try CURLIES*(81). When I first saw it on the rack I thought it was no good, then managed to convince myself it was (short and curlies??). He held and eventually challenged off the phony. He closed the board and I exchanged the U, and of course drew another one. Serves me right for the phony. I was never really in the game after that. He double-doubled with WILDEsT(98), folled by OUZO(31) and OX(36). I got down (D)HOBI (45), which earned a "nice play" from Steve. Later in the game holding EEFLRS? I found one of the two playable bingos FLENSER(78). He held for a while, decided the only way to lose was to challenge so he let it go. If I don't play curlies who knows how the rest of game plays out, but If I don't lose this game Steve doesn't go on to win the 1000 bucks prize, so I don't feel too bad.

Match 2 - Pete Zeigler (1651 - now 1633) 2-1 Win
I have to admit I was intimidated going into this Match, Pete has a much bigger word knowledge then I do.

Game 1 - Score: 502-291 (Loss)
I believe this is my biggest tourney loss so far. My racks were decent, my timing was just off, and his was great. He opened with BEDOUIN(76) , a few turns later I got down nET(T)IEST (68), and he responded with ROADIES(75). I made a stupid challenge of his R(O)TENONE(61) a few turns later, thinking I would have seen the word already studying by probability. I was aware that he knew he had greater word knowledge then me, so I had assumed he would try some phonies, I guess not.

Game 2 - Score: 427-411 (Win)
This was a back and forth game where I never felt secure in having a lead.
He bingoed early on with V(A)RIOLES(62) which I followed up with READOUT/O(VARIOLES)(74). He gets down ZONAE (39), I bingo/bango with GARROTE(S)(72) and LIAISON (73) to go up 80. Two turns later he gets down POUTINE(77) and the game is very close there on out. 379-377 and my turn with AACEHO? with the bag empty I find the best endgame sequence according to quackle (although he was holding DDHSY?, which helped) and pull out the win. His last play, DaSHY/MINDINGS* (34) I had to let go even though I was 95% sure it was phony.

Game 3 - Score: 335-404 (Win)
Nothing too exciting here, he bingo's with (U)RENIMIA, i bingo with CREAT(I)NE and FANT(A)siE (missing ANTEFIXA for 25 more). He was getting some bad racks I think because a couple times he sighed loudly. The turning point might have been when he played AGLEY/(OAT)Y* and I challenged it off. I drew most of the power tiles as well, but according to quackle played a pretty solid game.

Match 3 - Rob Long (1548 - now 1470) 2-1 Win

Game 1 - Score: 451-352 (Loss)
Never had a shot in this one. He opens with FRESHeD(86), and two turns later REeNAC(T)S (86), to put me down 150. My draw into ANTES is bv and I knew right then that game wasnt meant to be. I have a nice run later in the game of LEISTER (76), FLEX(54), HITTER(50) to bring me within 30, but he gets the j and z out of the bag picks up some spread points.

Game 2 - Score: 435-415 (Win)
I bingoed early on with SAFROLS (78) he hit back with the double-double GRANTE(R)s (82), I hit right back with OVER(L)AID (84). He did one of those annoying sigh/grunt things as I was putting this down. A couple of turns later I get STEELING(70) and coast til the end game. I block the better of his two out bingo spots, and he pulls close with INGeS(T)ED(75). After this game Rob said to me "I have a request for next game, could you not chew gum? Its really annoying." Linda Hoggat was next to me also chewing gum and kinda laughed. Later we joked about it, I have to assume its because he had just lost a close one.
Game 3 - Score: 444-310 (Win)
The tiles were falling in my favor this game. SERINES(91) early on, then I foolishly challenged S(WOB), (thought it was swab/swop, must have missed swob), then he drew into some ugly tiles while I bingoed again with SINGLET(88). He wrongly challenged my play of REDIAE/(LEV)A and even though he drew both blanks it was too late to do anything with them. (He double blanked me all 3 games btw)

After the last game a group of us (Linda Hoggat, Jeff Clark, Steve Grob, Tina Totten King, Roger Cullman, and another lady I dont know) went to Red Lobster to eat. Great food, I split the trout with Roger (big meals). Afterwards we wen't back to the hotel and played a poker tournament. 20 dollar buy in, started with two tables and I believe 15 people. I played smart, caught a couple breaks and ended up getting to the final two. Me and steve knapp decided to split it rather then play heads up all night (Tina, Steve and Roger were waiting for me, we had an hour to drive) and walked away with 120 bucks. Not a bad first day, the sheet estimdated my rating gain at 84, I was tied for the class prize and I won some money.

Warren Day 2

I ended the tourney 7-8 -59, going 2-4 today. I lost one game by 4, and I am pretty sure better play would have won me that game, so I should have been able to go 3-3. Not winning that game cost me probably 30 rating points and maybe also the class prize (150 bucks). I'm not sure what it is about day 2 in tourneys, I did the same in the lexington tourney. Oh well, cant always play at your best, and considering the average rating of my oponents was 1570 I feel I performed OK. Estimated rating gain of 52 points, up to 1424. I am pretty happy with the tourney overall, I definitely enjoyed it. I also ended up winning 10 bucks for highest play (dorkiest 3x3 for 158). Sometime this week I'll post individual game recaps and more info/stories from the weekend, and maybe upload a few games to crosstables as well.

Highlight of the tourney: Beating Steve Grob (eventual tourney champ) in the first game with a score of 525, getting 4 bingos (ratified, bulking, tercels, and the disconnected 9 greediest).

Warren Day 1

Day 1 went pretty well, 5-4 on the day. Each match consists of 3 games against the same opponent.
1st match was with Steve Grob (1648), Won the first game in a bagging (played the disconnected 9 greediest too. Lost the next two.
2nd match was with Pete Zeigler (1651) , won the series 2-1, decent draws
3rd match was with Rob Long (1548), won the series 2-1, funny story on this opponent to follow.
Ended the day 5-4, estimated rating gain 84.
Afterwords we stayed around and played poker, 20 buy in tourney. I made it to the final 2 and split the pot with Steve Knapp for 120 bucks,
Tomorrow my first match is against Kevin Lucas (1392) http://www.cross-tables.com/results.php?p=811 , right now its me and him neck and neck for the class prize (150 bucks), so I hope to do well. You can follow the tourney or read up info on it at http://www.neoscrabble.com/site.cfm/Events/Warren.cfm

I'll eventually type up game by game summaries, next week sometime.

Club Session of 2/16/2009 (2009-05)

Seven of us were in attendance for tonight's club session. This was Betty's first Monday evening club session; it was great to have her with us!

GOOD LUCK to Tyler who will be competing at a tournament this coming weekend at Warren, Michigan!

A reminder to everyone that entry deadlines are approaching for the Scrabble tournament at Plainfield, Indiana (near Indianapolis), on Saturday, March 7. This is a single-day, six-round tourney, played in groups of six, using round-robin and king-of-the-hill pairings. It would be an excellent opportunity for new members to play at their first tournament. Will, Tyler, and John have already registered. (Update, 2/23/2009 -- also Steve and Andy.) Here is a link to the tourney's list of registrants on Cross-Tables; near the top of that page is a link for the tourney's flyer, which gives all the details and registration information.

Club Session of 2/8/2009 (2009-03)

(Post incomplete; more to follow)

13 players attended today's club session; if a few more of the regulars had made it to club today, we would have topped our existing record of 15! We even had a shortage of game timers for today's session.

Today we had a guest, Brian, from Villa Hills, in northern Kentucky. Brian currently has a National Scrabble Association rating of 1739 and is the number one rated player in Kentucky. It was great to have him with us for club and to give our better players some challenging competition. Come back again, Brian, and often! It was good to have you with us.

Funny things do happen at club. In Round 2 today, Andrea and Amanda needed to draw to see which of them played first. It took four attempts before they could resolve this -- for the first three tries, they each drew the same letter each time.

Here are the stats for this afternoon's session, based on three rounds of play, with any extra games played beyond three not included. Session results are listed first by total wins, then by spreads.

RESULTS
13 players playing 32 games

Andrea -- 3-0, +315
Brian -- 3-0, +121
John -- 2-1, +259
Betty -- 2-1, +55
Andy -- 2-1, +25
Cheryl -- 1-1, +126
Patsy -- 1-0, +50
Amanda -- 1-1, +41
Tyler -- 1-2, +30
Janet -- 0-1, -107
Will -- 0-3, -176

Club Session of 2/2/2009 (2009-02)

(Delayed Posting made 2/15/2009)

This was the first of our weekly club sessions on Monday evenings at the meeting room at VFW Post 680 on Leestown Road. The room is quite large with plenty of tables for Scrabble play. An added advantage is being able to get some excellent chili dogs from the VFW's bar -- I had three on this our first time here! LOL As with any new location, there are a few minor matters to be worked out, but the opportunity of having a regular weekly meeting site certainly makes this place a very welcome opportunity for our club.

There were nine of us, including two newcomers, present for tonight's club session.

Here are the stats for tonight's session, based on three rounds of play, with any extra games played beyond three not included. Session results are listed first by total wins, then by spreads.
